That’s because a photograph was recently unearthed that could shed some light on what actually happened to the famed author and aviator. The new photo in question was discovered back in 2012 by a retired US Treasury agent name Les Kinney and will be the basis of a new History Channel documentary called Amelia Earhart: The Lost Evidence that will air this Sunday.
The picture appears to show Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan on a dock in the Marshall Islands. At that time, the islands were occupied by the Japanese and you can see what appears to be her plane on a boat in the background.

OSP has identified a 20 year old male, last known address Saint Helens (OR), as the person of interest in this case. He is currently in an area hospital being treated for injuries consistent with an automobile crash. We will not be releasing his name at this time as it could jeopardize the integrity of the case.

OSP is still seeking witnesses to the crash or any information regarding the Ford Explorer. More information will be released when it is appropriate.

On October 18, 2017 at about 5:30AM, OSP Troopers and emergency personnel responded to the report of two vehicle crash on Highway 212 west of Damascus near SE Wyeast Avenue.

Preliminary investigation revealed a 1999 Ford Explorer was traveling eastbound when it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a 2000 Toyota Camry. The driver of the Toyota, Ana WAKEFIELD, age 20, of Damascus, was critically injured and taken to Oregon Health Sciences University. Following the crash, the driver of the Ford fled the scene. He was described by witnesses as a white male in his twenties, slim build and dark hair.

A Washington County Sheriff's Office K9 responded and deployed to assist with the search. After a lengthy search the driver was not located. The Ford had switched plates and it is believed it had recently been on an used car lot. Attached is a photo of a dealer sticker.

Anyone who has information about this crash or who the driver may be is urged to call OSP at 503-375-3555. OSP was assisted by the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Hillsboro Police, Clackamas Fire and the Oregon Department of Transportation. No further information at this time.
